What you can learn from great speeches – Barack Obama

This is another great speech by someone I really admire. In the 2008 campaign Obama raised the bar for all speechmakers.

This is the speech where he responded to criticism that he was “Just a speechmaker”

So what can you learn from it?

I’m not going to dwell here on the text. As ever Obama is well served by John Favreau his young speech-writer.

I am going to dwell on the delivery. Obama has a great voice. He usually uses it to be warm and sincere, but here, well he sounds mad. If you have to make a speech at half time in the final watch this.
If you have a huge event at work and you know everyone needs to be fired up watch this.
If you want to see the power of pauses. The pregnant moment when there is silence, watch this.
If you want to see how to vary pace, volume and power to have impact watch this.

If you want to make a GREAT speech that gets people clapping you have to watch this.

And the message.

Don’t tell me words don’t matter
I have a dream? Just words?

If you are short of time watch the first section up to “8 elections straight.”
But do yourself a favour, skip to the end and watch the last 90 seconds.
